Hootie & the Blowfish was formed in 1986 by a group of friends that met as freshman while attending the University of South Carolina. The band made their mainstream breakthrough with the release of their debut album Cracked Rear View in 1994. It produced hit singles like “Only Wanna Be With You,” “Let Her Cry,” “Hold My Hand,” and “Time.” Cracked Rear View has been named the 14th best-selling album of all time in the U.S. and has been certified platinum a total of 21 times. In 1996 they took home a Grammy Award for Best New Artists and went on to release four more studio albums including Fairweather Johnson (1996), Musical Chairs (1998), Hootie & the Blowfish (2003) and Looking for Lucky (2005). In a 2008 interview with AOL Sessions, the band’s front man Darius Rucker stated that Hootie & the Blowfish would be going on hiatus so that he would have an opportunity to pursue a solo career as a country musician. They have reunited only one time since the announcement for a performance on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2015, where Rucker announced the band would be getting back together. Hootie & the Blowfish gained popularity due to their unique musical style which contrasted with other bands that were emerging at the same time, when grunge ruled the airwaves. Their sound has been described as “a mainstream pop variation of blues-rock.” They have also been described as heartland rock, roots rock and jangle pop.
